"Walt Whitman, prophet of Gay liberation To discuss Walt Whitman is to discuss what is finest and truest about the American Dream, for Whitman is the American Dream"

"Simplicity is the glory of expression" Walt Whitman

The American dream is now more than ever under scrutiny. Just as it was when this utter talent was alive. America in today's world seems to be grappling with what it is. Who it is? Land of the free or the land of the free for some. Walt Whitman seemed to grapple with this America concept.

In a time where repression and the gluttony of wealth reigned supreme Walt Whitman did as most talents do ... working for others! He was dogsbody to lawyers and doctors then became an apprentice typesetter for a New York paper than as a schoolmaster. All the while creating his life's work.

Like many books and writings, they fail to say that he was Gay. Well, he was, and he subtly yet bravely wrote on the subject.

In our era being queer is still a secret for many, yet Walt wrote it! Cleverly and powerfully.

Please read more about this man and read his poems. The power of the prose is visceral and real and so dislike our popular tame fearful published works 😫.

Below are some of my favourite extracts and quotes. take a look and go read about his life at this link

A leaf for hand in hand;

You natural persons old and young!

You on the Mississippi and on all the branches and bayous of the Mississippi!

You friendly boatmen and mechanics! You roughs!

You twain! and all processions moving along the streets!

I wish to infuse myself among you till I see it common for you to walk hand in hand.

"Re-examine all that you have been told ... dismiss that which insults your soul"

Walt Whitman

"The real war will never get in the books"

Body Electric (extract)

pssss Lana Del Rey loves this one

...I sing the body electric,

The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them,

They will not let me off till I go with them, respond to them,

And discorrupt them, and charge them full with the charge of the soul.

Was it doubted that those who corrupt their own bodies conceal themselves?

And if those who defile the living are as bad as they who defile the dead?

And if the body does not do fully as much as the soul?

And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul?

2

The love of the body of man or woman balks account, the body itself balks account,

That of the male is perfect, and that of the female is perfect...
